A/N: Yes, this IS a no Mame Ed fic. If you haven't already been able to tell by my user icons, I love the lil guy, and finally a bunny got me to write (The no Mame doujin are love btw). This will most likely be continued at some point (When, hell I don't know, ask the bunnies XP)

Colored by yours truly. I do not take credit for the lineart because it came from the no Mame doujin (But I did alter the image)

He stared, blinking upwards towards the cloudy, ash colored sky. It was one thing to be lost in a place one sort of knew, but it was another to be lost completely without even a friendly face to keep watch for. In a world that was ten times your size, five inches wouldn’t do you a whole lot of good when trying to gain the attention of others. You were more likely to be stepped on, or even worse, turned into food for a stray animal.

How he had ended up in that dark alleyway was actually quite a wild little tale. Not only had he been separated from his brother, he had been nearly squashed by a pair of heavy boots, swept into a dustpan and deposited into a gutter, and finally a cat had chased him down and cornered between a couple of oddly shaped buildings. His only salvation was that of a small crack that was just big enough for him to squeeze into and wait until the cat got either bored and/or hungry, and decided to pursue more animated prey.

He was dirty, hungry, tired, and if another cat did decide that he was going to be lunch, he wasn’t sure he had the energy to run again for his life.

Yeah... five inches really didn’t get you very far a world meant for giants.

Just as his head started to droop, eyes closing on their own, it was the racket from a few trash cans further down in the alley hidden in dark shadows that sent his mind into a panic, his heart fluttering rapidly in response. If it was another cat, he had nowhere to run this time around. His only source of protection had completely disappeared on the train as he found himself stranded amongst the leaves of a bush that he had been knocked into by a woman’s handbag. Maybe if his brother had not been in such a hurry to get them to the train, his absence would have been noted the second he was missing… But people tend to loose their heads when their mind is cluttered with time tables and future destinations.

He tried to flatten himself against the wall, using a slated wooden box as a hopeful place to hide behind. As long as whatever it was didn’t see him, he could hopefully live long enough to find a small niche somewhere to go and curl up in for the night.

The alleyway’s narrowness didn’t allow for much light to chase away the darkness, only making things scarier with ghostly illuminated outlines. If his heart could have escaped from his chest, it would have as the box was pulled away. He had been found out, and the only response left was to crouch into as small a ball as he could, placing both tiny arms over his head, eyes screwed tightly shut. Maybe the death would be quick and he wouldn’t feel it...

Instead of sharp claws, he felt a poke right in the middle of his head. Maybe whatever it was, was trying to see if he’d give it a little entertainment before devouring him whole.

“What the hell...”

Ok, the voice was defiantly not a cats...

He gradually opened one eye, but tried to remain into as small a ball as he could as the sensation of being picked up by the back of his coat and was being held loftily about a foot off of the ground.

He was face to eye of what looked like a cat’s, but it was purple in color.. No cat he had ever known or been chased by had that color of eyes. Not even the old tabby that had the funny reddish-blue eyes even came close to what he was seeing from between his bangs.

The swaying was starting to make him sick as he beholder of the violet eye swung him back forth, a matching partner coming into his gaze before shutting his eyes tight again. Whatever this thing was, he hoped it would just quit with whatever it was doing and just get things over with. He’d lived a long life as far he was concerned, and it really had been fun for the most part.

“Hmm... I wonder what I’m supposed to do with you...” the voice sounded rather quizzical in a pouty sort of way

Instead of being placed down, he felt himself rising rather rapidly as the figure stood up, holding him high over their head. He could not longer hide himself in a ball now that he was being looked up at a new sensation in and among itself, dangling helplessly between the forefinger and thumb of a emerald haired human with violet, playful cat eyes, a grin starting to split the face in two.

“I wonder if you’re good to eat since you’re no bigger than a bean...” the voice chuckled

He started to spaz as he was lowered towards an open mouth, letting out a squeak as his arms flailed wildly between himself and his current captor. It was the laughter that caused him to look rather puzzled as he peeked out from behind his hands. Whatever this person wanted, he wasn’t quite sure because at the moment, they seemed to just want to scare the living hell out of him as far as he was concerned.

“You know, you remind me of someone... But it’s been far too long since I last saw that person. He kind of dropped off the face of the Earth without a trace...” the expression drifted off momentarily as whomever this person was replayed a memory in their mind. “Same red coat and blond hair too... Hell if you weren’t actually the size of a damn bean, I could have sworn you were the chibi-san in the flesh...”

He really didn’t like the look in those eyes as he remained airborne. They spoke volumes that the lips were not...

“You look like the brat, but defiantly don’t act like him... So the next question is: just what the hell are you?”

After a few moments of silence, the violet eyed figure growled in frustration.. Which he noted DID sound just like a cat, sending him back into a panic. There were things in the world he had been told by his brother that looked human but weren’t, but it never went any further than that because he had never been face to face with something of fantasy to find out the truth.

“Alright! Fine! If you can’t tell me what you are, do you at least have a damn name?” the voice was rather agitated, a flicker of flames licking just beyond the mirrored surface of both eyes.

His squirming from the further panicking earned him the privilege of slipping from his coat and tumbling towards the ground, which was coming up faster than he would have liked. Instead of a hard impact from the fall, he landed and rolled along something a bit softer than pavement.

He was dizzy, but still alive. Giants were scary when angered...

“Geeze if you want to end it that badly, I can gladly do it for you...” he spoke with a rather snide tone to his voice.

He shook his head, watching as the doubled figure retuned to a single unit, the face framed in emerald tresses. Well it didn’t seem to be out to kill him as far as he could tell...

“Hmm... Guess I could tell you my name since you seem to be rather unwilling to give up yours... Name’s Envy... “ the most he got in return was a half-opened mouth head tilt.

“You could at least say something instead of looking at me like that…” he responded with an eyebrow quirked.

With a sigh, the coat that had been separated from its tiny owner was offered back up, which was gladly taken from slender fingers.

“You know, since you look so much like that damn chibi-san, I’m going to steal his name…” Envy watched as the form sitting right in the middle of his half-gloved palm restored the fallen coat. How easy it would have been to just crush it and be done with it... But he was getting the slight feeling that there may have been more to the thing sitting in his hand than just the looks.

“You know Ed, I’m just wondering how much of a coincidence there is between you ending up here and the chibi-san disappearing... So, can you at least show me how long you’ve been around for?”

It was rather sickeningly cute how the tiny bean!Ed held up 5 gloved fingers after taking a count.

“Hmmm... You don’t suppose... Nah I doubt that is even the case…” this earned him another tilt of Ed’s head. “His brother hasn’t even been seen for years... The tin can just up and disappeared with the squirt around the same time. So however you ended up to be, it couldn’t have been through their actions…”

There was a brief moment of contemplation before Envy spoke again “Or could it…? You know, I haven’t actually stretched my legs in a very long time... And here I thought I was going to be bored forever…” the laugh made Ed cover his ears, closing his eyes tight.

The next thing he knew, he was hoisted to chin level and offered a perch among the green vines. This prompted insubstantial footsteps to climb onto Envy’s shoulder, and then plop down next to the black clad neck, tiny arms wrapping around the closest strand of hair he could reach.

It was a light touch on the side of his neck that caused him to turn his head enough to see a small smiling face looking up at him which made him want to retch. He rolled his eyes as he walked into the darkness, leaving behind nothing more than a moved box and one rather perplexed cat that happened to miss out on a free meal.
